Like father, like son - Part 2

I had posted earlier some of the things that Jack does that reminds me of myself as a child. I’ve noticed another similarity.

My grandmother (dad’s side) used to tell me stories about the times that she would babysit me as a baby and a toddler. Apparently I was somewhat of a mama’s boy and would pretty much cry the moment my mother left. Eventually my grandmother found two things that I liked. One was a piece of bologna rolled up with ketchup in the middle. I haven’t tried this with Jack yet, but I think I will after our next grocery shop.

The other thing that my grandmother gave me was scotch tape. Apparently she could give a piece of the sticky tape to play with and it kept me occupied for a good while. I can picture it in my head. Me, sitting in a playpen, pulling a piece of tape off of one finger and then the other, and then trying to unstick it from itself. While I don’t remember it personally, watching Jack has made it easy for me to picture. He loves tape. I don’t know that it keeps him occupied as long as it did me, but he likes to play with it. If I’m sitting at the desk, he’ll come over and open the drawer and start to get some. Of course I’ll stop him and get it for him. But who am I to deny my son the fun of sticky tape.

At lunch he’ll pull the labels off of the lunch meat container (the factory seals) and play with them. These are a little bit stickier than regular tape. When he’s done, I just put them on the top of the container for next time.

I wonder, do they make bologna that comes in those neat little Gladware containers?

‘Til next time.
