One infatuation to another

Thomas the Tank Engine. That’s all it’s been for the longest time. It was an obsession. Yes, we helped fuel the obsession, but it kept him happy. He seemed so interested in it, so we decided that should be the theme of his birthday party. Invitations just went out in the mail. Hopefully, his obsession lasts at least until his party.

Why wouldn’t it? Because now he’s starting a new obsession. The movie “Cars”. It has quickly become his favorite movie (he calls it Tonka Town because the first time he saw it, it lookes like the cover to a TT book he has). Of course, just like the Thomas obsession, part of the Cars obsession can be blamed on my sister (just kiddin’ Auntie D). Her son received a bunch of the vehicles from the movie for Christmas, and Jack started playing with them, and continues to play with them when we go for our weekly visits.

Ok, we’re to blame too. Yes, we’re also fueling this obsession. We let him watch the movie (he’s watching it with Mommy on the couch right now, reciting lines and sounds from it), he has two of the cars, and now he’s addicted to the soundtrack (we borrowed it from the library). It’s cute to hear him say shaboom, shaboom. It’s not cute having to play the same three songs over and over, and repeating the same part of one song numerous times (Life is a Highway, he likes to say “Whoooo” when they say it in the beginning).

I think in the long run it’s a good thing, because having two obsessions, he splits the time between them, making each one seem like less of an obsession and more like something he just really likes (like Teletubbies, lord help me). Plus, we’ve used so much of Thomas to help him learn things (like letters) that it’s good to have something else to teach him with.

So kachow, and ’til next time.
